Why is our society so caught up with outer beauty?

Makeup, hair products... I know appearance matters, but does it really matter THAT much? Why is our society so caught up with outer beauty?
Beauty fades as with everything else. In the end, well lets just say, you better have one hell of a personality to get you through :)Why is our society so caught up with outer beauty?
The standard of beauty in different cultures varies incredibly depending on the demands of the environment. If there is little food, cultures usually value more fatty people. If there are a lot of parasites in the region, maybe the whites of your eyes and teeth are important. It all depends. Other things are more subtle but have been linked to whether you have good or bad genes. Beautiful, symmetric women with large breasts, hips, and large cheekbones and small chins and jaws are thought to be the most fertile and have the best genetics and so it would be favorable to mate with them because you'd have the best offspring. Women (for mating purposes) tend to view masculine and strong men with chiseled features as the best mates because once again, they have high levels of testosterone and probably have the best genes and the genes you'd want your offspring to have.

';Ugly';, asymmetrical, wrinkled, or square women are thought to be low on estrogen and so we as a western culture, since we value fertility, a lack of those things means you might be infertile and have bad genetics so you're deemed ugly and then nobody wants to have sex with you. -.-

..Sorry. Sucks. But thats all it is. We value beauty on a much deeper level. Its not being superficial; Its being what you've been programmed to be for generations. Its because of these harsh rules that you're alive and well today and not some disgusting beast. Cause imagine what would happen if we favored the ugly? -shudders-
Because you see the outside of a person before you know the inside. Your first impression of someone is what they look like, so, with that said, I think that outer beauty and looks matter. Also, by taking care of yourself (makeup, hair-do's, clothes), you are showing that you care about yourself.

I hope this helps!
yeah lol. i mean if you really think about it sure ppl are like its the right thing to do to think about someones personality instead of looks but i mean really who does that? changing your appearance and looking good is what attracts mates. and when you look at a person the first thing you think is 'that is what i want my kids to look like' and no one wants ugly kids so we automaticly go for the more attractive opposite.
You know, some people say that personality is the only thing that counts, but thats not exactly true. You have to be attracted to the person your with right? Or how can you handle being around them, if you don't even think they are attractive. It doesn't matter if they attractive to everyone else. Just you.
I guess because looking good can take you places. People used to want to look good so they could find a mate, like all animals, but I think that it's been taken too far and has people hating themselves because they don't look like the people they see on tv and in magazines.
i'm afraid it won't change.

but what i do hope change is the way girls treat themselves.

how they put on all the makeup and wear the nasty clothing and flirt with every guy knowing they only want one thing.

girls nowadays need self respect, dignity, and confidence.
i think it is because it is what you give off as a first impression. it is the first thing that people see when they look at you. Also like what was said before, society promotes beauty a lot more then they promote inner beauty.
appearances adhere to our individuality. i dont think appearances matter that much but, i like being an individual with my hair and makeup, because sometimes your personality doesnt show.

hope i helped!
Because that's what media always promotes. I mean,

personality does matter a lot, but I love good looking people.
society needs people to spend money on things they don't need and makes people become obsessed with looks and it ends up causing eating disorders etc.
Survival of the fittest. :P
blame the media :\
