Why are we hardwired to respond to beauty?

I read this article: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3917414 It basically proved people are more likely to help and want to be friends with beautiful people. Even babies stare longer at prettier than average faces. Why is that so? How come our genetics has forced us to assume that attractive people are more deserving of our help or friendship or love? Why are we hardwired to respond to beauty?
It's based in natural instinct for preserving the human species. People are instinctually attracted to those who appear the healthiest and strongest, which are traits you'd want to pass on to the next generation to ensure the species lives on. If our ancestors weren't strong enough to chase down prey, they'd starve and the species would die out. If women weren't strong enough or healthy enough to carry babies to term, then the species would die out.

Different people are attracted to different things in people, which ensures a genetic variety in the species which also helps ensure overall health. Why are we hardwired to respond to beauty?
i remember watching a little part of some discovery channel show that is similar to this subject. it was all about finding your ';soul mate'; and how when we see someone attractive, we see them as potential mates. and people who are more physically attractive have stronger genes, and usually better health, which would make for a healthy baby. so basically that show is saying, it all have to do with our mating instincts.

hope this helps..
Well first of all, beauty is not objective (think of the beholder). Some phenotypical features happen to be more effective for attracting mates, and consequently pass on those traits. These ';beautiful'; traits have a genetic advantage, and are conditioned in our minds as being superior.
The morphology of babies and other humans is naturally appealing to us because we need to take care of babies and be sexually attracted to other humans respectively. It's just an evolutionary psychological trait that is inherent.
because beautiful people tend to be more healthy than ugly people, just as smart people tend to live longer than dumb ones. symmetry in humans corresponds to greater health and people with symmetry are physically attractive.
Well humans are a visual species and are generally more attracted to 'pretty' things... We need to see past that to the inner beauty of people and other animals in nature. ^^

Does anyone have info on the Empire Beauty Schools in Virginia?

I am currently looking into enrolling at the empire beauty school in richmond va. i was just wondering if anyone had any information on it. it's about 20,000 to go so i don't want to make a big mistake. Does anyone have info on the Empire Beauty Schools in Virginia?
Oh gosh don't! I went to look at my local empire beauty school and several girls there were from the Virginia school (I'm in NC) all I heard was terrible things about it, I.E. Major drama, no enforced rules..etc.. I would never spend $20,000 on going to a school that teaches sub-par techniques.

I'm attending the Aveda School in Charlotte, and I know that I'm getting the best education in the business!

Also, another reason I didn't like them, they messed up my hair and turned my mother's hair green/orange instead of blond. I would suggest getting your hair done there and not telling them you are thinking of attending the school. If it turns out fantastic maybe I'm wrong....Does anyone have info on the Empire Beauty Schools in Virginia?
Yeah. I know a few people who worked their. The Curriculm is old fashion, you spend almost 500 hours in freshmen class, which is way too much, and the people running the school(The director.) know nothing about Cosmetology, All they have is a Bachelors which doesn't do much in the cosmetology world.

Why are people so concerned with outside beauty?

It ( in all honesty ) is the last thing I notice. I love a smart mind and a genuinely kind heart first. Why are people so concerned with outside beauty?
Because of some of these reasons: fashion and tabloid magazines, the media (TV and movies). They influence people's perceptions of themselves. If someone doesn't look like a celebrity, they may end up in the cosmetic surgery office, bulimic or with self-esteem issues. People compare themselves to others -- that is the problem -- and they feel they are not good enough so they want to change their appearance.

Look at all the cosmetic ads. Women are bombarded with messages that they need to constantly beautify themselves. I guess that's why it's a billion-dollar industry.

While outside beauty is aesthetically pleasing, it's not nearly as important as inner beauty. The personality is what outshines all the products you put on your skin.

I, like you, love a smart mind and genuinely kind heart first. A person can be beautiful on the outside but ugly on the inside, or ugly on the outside, beautiful on the inside, or both beautiful on the outside and inside.

In any case, beauty is skin deep. Why are people so concerned with outside beauty?
First of all I like your usename it's cute and secondly you sound like someone I'd love to be friends with.

Okay my answer is that us humans suffer from a sort of egotistical view of how the opposite sex or the same sex if you're that way inclined should appear and attract us.

Some of us also suffer from alot of vanity about our appearance.

I agree with the reason that we want to mate with someone attracive so our kids aren't ugly.

That's a really harsh way of thinking though.
I'd rather not look at ugly things. I'm quite sure others feel the same way.
I think alot of it has to do with how you were brought up (obviously you come from a good home) and society. How much people rely on magazines to tell them what is right what is wrong, what is beautiful or not really has an effect on them, long term in all aspects of their life. I am concerned with my own outside beauty for myself because i feel good when i think i look good. but as for other people if they are nice and can make me laugh they are golden. beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder, not on the cover of the cosmo magazine.
I'm more concerned with a truly beautiful intermingling of the two.
because we don't have time to spend with that person and get to know them

so we take the easy way...if they're good lookin then they must have positive attributes

if not they're crap

but if you're lookin for a companion then you should give him/her an opportunitiy to impress you and spend loads of time so that both of you can get to know each other
Animal instinct controls the attraction, the need to procreate. it's built in our genetic code. It's nature. Look at the brightly colored birds and ornate horned animals, nature needs them to be a certain way to make pro creation desireable. You have just evolved with a higer level of humans to reason that outside beauty isn't needed for attraction as much as it was before.
I think it's built in survival, like to keep the species alive, the most beautiful and healthy would create good offspring, like animals choosing mates, isn't there some scientific study on this?.....But we are advanced and can be attracted to all kinds of things to a person......but ., many , I guess would worry..' What the other people would say of your friends %26amp; lovers '.... I like someone who likes me for me!..........Quote from Chris Rock.....'You have to Love the Crust of a Woman/Person'
lol. No offense

but in reality, looks is all it matters. But personality first though! But really ... everyone wants to look good to impress someone :\ it sucks because people don't actually care.. if you know what i mean :\
Because a lot of people are superficial.
Because the outside is WIDE OPEN! It's limitless, but if you put too much beauty inside there's only so much room and get's cluttered.

Well, I don't like that answer at all, but perhaps that is why people think that way...They don't realize that only the inside is infinite. Well, that's there loss and as much as I would like to explain and teach them better, there's so much beauty in me, I'm pretty occupied with sharing it with my reflection of the world around me.

Well, that didn't sound so nice either, a little egoistic. O.K. The outside is infinite because it reflects the inside as well, once you can see it within yourself you understand that everything around you is really the beauty you share.

O.K. I guess there's no good way of explaining the balance unless you can be self-confident and in awe of the world around you at the same time.

Hmmm....I'll have to put that conflict on my list of things to solve. But, if you wear a flower in your heart and a smile in your mind, you'll understand.
this mentality is the creation of people themselves. We have no one but ourselves to blame for such shallowness
To reach the smart mind you have to go through the face and for a shallow person thats where it stops. for a person who is of a higher iq,the content of the conversation matters. it is so nice to see that there are people out there who have deeper values.
Because people like to look at nice things. Do you want a rusted beat-up car or a nice shiny one? Same for people. No one wants to look at a troll.
because we have the eyes, you can tell a beautiful personality at a distance.a smart mind and kind heart comes when you get to know a person

  • I'm going to be in a beauty pageant and I need a talent! What should i do?

I love love love fashion. Im a fashion design major. I also love extravagant yet simple things and i love doing things big! Please help me.I'm going to be in a beauty pageant and I need a talent! What should i do?
I think that this is a great talent for you to display, but I understand the challenge for presenting it on stage. Here are some ideas:

    1. You can wear one of you designs and model it. Have the emcee give a description of the outfit before your talent presentation, then do a modeling routine to some fun music that calls attention to fun parts of the garment - like maybe the stitching.

    2. You could sew something on stage to music. You'd have to do this quickly and be really entertaining and animated. You would have to prepare pieces in advance so you could get the sewing done quickly. Then stand up at the end with a finished product. With practice this could be a really cool presentation.

    3. You could sketch something onstage to music. Put an easel on stage turned slightly toward you with a big pad of paper, but where they audience can still see it. Dance around and sketch something quickly (find a design you love and just work on doing it within the time limit, then work on adding dance moves for entertainment). At the end of the presentation, take the pad off, turn it to the audience, and show it to them.

Those are just a few ideas for what you could do. I've judged tons of pageants and seen talent after talent and I'll tell you, anything that's not a vocal presentation is a treat. You'd definately stand out and be memorable. Just make sure your entertaining, it's all in the presentation.

Good luck!I'm going to be in a beauty pageant and I need a talent! What should i do?
since its a beauty pageant, dressing is extremely important. Get a fashion consultant, or if you are professional enough, get some appropriate dress and proper make up.
    your talent is beauty !!!!
tell that! fashion is a great talent!

Beauty and Dining out are indeed subjects which are of interest to many.

But, the subject matter is expansive only at the conversational level of consciousness and thus not usually subject to deep analysis.

What color dress should i get for beauty review?

The Beauty Review is a beauty pageant we have at my high school each year... i have pretty tan skin and blonde hair... and i have brown eyes but i wear green contacts.. my hair now is a good bit lighter blonde than in the picture and my hair is really Long.. i have extensions... but i need help on the color and style of the dress.... PLEASE HELP!!!What color dress should i get for beauty review?
When is the pageant? The color and style will depend on when the pageant takes place. Fashions for fall and spring coincide with each other but are very distinct in their own way. If the pageant is in the fall, as in before January, you can get away with darker colors. Because of your complexion and hair color, I wouldn't go too dark. I think a darker teal or cranberry purple would look good. Along with being popular colors this season, i don't think you'll see many other girls wearing the same colors or dress. With extensions there are soo many hair styles that can work. If you wear your hair up, you can choose a dress with more detail on the shoulders and top. If you wear it half down or all down, I would chose a dress with more detail throughout or on the bottom.

www.mbfashionweek.com shows you the spring fashions if the pageant is in the spring. Brighter, but elegant styles and colors are great. With your features, spring has unlimited options for you. I'd be careful with the yellows though, as they may wash you out a little. The lilacs, pinks, and greens would look good. Check out the links below for sites where you can find good dresses.

A Beauty Review huh? Well a classic color like black would be best! But you should go try on a few dresses %26amp; have a friend or some one close go with you %26amp; tell you what color looks best on you. With all of your features I think yellow or maybe a turquoise would look awesome! I hope this helps! Good Luck :)
Go to the dress shop and try them all on and see which one looks and feels the best. This is the best way to find one that is suitable. Good luck %26amp; God bless****
try a soft pink or an aqua.. it really looks good on blonde hair and tan skin!
how about a bright green dress like a lime green dress that maybe is really long and accents your boobs for example a strip of fabric around the underneath of your boobs and have the top of the dress shaped in a v around your boobs. and maybe have alittle design on your dress like a flower.
